Global action plan: "Time" will tell (Jerusalem Post)

By PINCHAS LANDAU
12/09/2010 23: 32 TIME magazine, perhaps even more than the most contemporary news magazines, is very keen on special issues Sometimes these are news driven by elections or natural disasters, and sometimes editors invent just subject around which build a special issue. Question last week was the kind of the latter. Has the topic "issue special delays", the delay in question was apparently was a decade 2000-2010, but in fact not. The real title of this cover story was was secured not sorting Garden "Decade in the magazine" commune, but something much more ambitious to capture the attention of the reader: what is it really happened.

The reason why I am highlighting this problem is not due to its pretentious name, nor the actual content - which, inevitably, a mixed bag of some very interesting and insightful, sometimes boring and some pieces downright silly. Greater say for me at least, was cover, designed as a collage of major events that occurred during the reporting period.

Apparently, while I would not swear to it, the size of the box and police announcing each event was supposed to indicate relative importance. so the attacks of September 11 was and received an attached image, made a few other items, even though the only comparable size "" Bush: mission accomplished. "" It is not known why designers and publishers thought that deserved an area larger than "Obama runs for President," especially in a liberal magazine.

But it's all secondary issues. The fascinating thing about this cover of an international magazine, was that the "menu" of 2000-2010 a key events was presented entirely from the American perspective - and that this approach just simply do not more. Indeed, it could be argued that "what happened" between 2000 and 2010 was that the United States lost enough hegemonic position that the rest of the world is not ready to bear his blind egocentrism.

United States second half of the 20th century, that might follow his own path and do his own thing without giving a roll that someone else has thought it moved somewhere between 2000 and 2010. Perhaps it was September 11, perhaps it was the financial crisis, or perhaps it is a combination of people and other events. But that is for certain, is that the world has changed. However, most Americans, even editors in Chief of a major international media magazine have not entered the magnitude and consequences of this change, a fortiori internalized their.

Obviously, each country have its own program of his own views and its own history of 10 to 11 in recent years. The Israeli point of view, critical events in this period that have shaped the development of the country and the psyche for many years to come include campaign suicide bomb from 2001-2004, the band of severe recession years, the withdrawal of the band of Gaza and so forth.

But, on a basic objective, there is no reason for them if poster on a global summary page - while the second intifada was much more important in the world as a whole as "Beltway sniper" or the "Virginia Tech shooting' are included both. Thus, the overall impact of the presentation focused on the American time together was laughable part and part pathetic.

Example? Most people would agree that the rise of China economy number two worldwide was the largest single development on the world stage over the past decade. But the time sees things differently: "Chinese export boom" Gets a tiny box, half the size of the box "Nicolas Sarkozy elected" adjacent to it. However, "Chinese earthquake" (remember that he?) I do) Gets a much larger than two of these elements box combined - although it is still less than the "Haiti earthquake", probably because it was closer to home.

Example? Sarkozy and Fidel Castro to boxes, but Lula, President of Brazil, 2002-2010 and supervised emergence of perennial country losing the power of Latin America, does not mention. You might think that Latin America will lead weight to United States, but you would be quite wrong - he has never and is not yet.

Example? It is not just politics. Why seven victories of Tower of France Lance Armstrong, but not the achievements of tennis Roger Federer? Why the Beijing Olympic Games, Sydney and not sections of the world held in Japan Korea and German, which attracted audiences? In short, TIME magazine has completely missed "what really happened" 2000-2010. If it were simply a journalistic problem, it would not matter. But it is an exact reflection of the mindset of the American elite - makes all worldwide problem, given that the world and especially America's allies is paying the price.
